Hays Clubs Award Scholarships

Jo Dare, FMS Counselor, Hays Member

The Hays Kiwanis Club Board awarded six scholarships for Middle School students in Hays to attend the KYLA (Kansas Youth Leadership Academy) Middle School camp this summer.  The camp is sponsored by the Center for Civic Leadership at Fort Hays State University, and is open to all middle school age students in Kansas.

"KYLA Camp is an opportunity for all students to develop the leader within through hands-on leadership activities, team building, reflection, and community service."  Jo Dare, Felten Middle School counselor and Kiwanis member, presented information to the board regarding the camp, asking for help providing the opportunity for middle school students to attend.  She explained that many students that exhibit leadership potential do not always have the funds to attend camp.  The Hays Kiwanis Club Board gave 6 scholarships, valued at $145 each, for Mrs. Dare and Mrs. Donna Hohmann, the counselor at Kennedy Middle School, also in Hays, to award to students who need the monetary help to be able to attend.

The requirement for students accepting the scholarships is to write the Hays Kiwanis club a thank you note, and for them to attend a Kiwanis meeting this fall and share with the members their experiences and benefits of attending the camp.
