The Kiwanis Club of Ellsworth honored Kevin D. Shaw by presenting his family the Kiwanis International Robert P. Connelly award for heroism on September 18, 2005 at St. Bernard’s Parish Hall in Ellsworth. Kevin, a 48 year old corrections officer, suffered a fatal heart attack within minutes of pulling Helen Wilkinson, from Topeka, from a burningvehicle that was involved in a traffic accident on August 15, 2004. This award also included a $500 savings bond. This is the 10th Robert P. Connelly Award presented in the history of the Kansas District. Only 507 Robert P. Connelly Medals of Heroism have been awarded internationally since 1967.
The award was presented to Kevin’s wife, Valerie, and other family members by Ross Janssen, Meteorologist from KWCH – 12, Wichita, KS, a friend of Kevin and a graduate of Ellsworth High School. Valerie Shaw thanked everyone for the award and longtime friend Ross Janssen spoke about Kevin’s willingness to help. Frank Toman, President of the club, opened the meeting with approximately 80 individuals in attendance.
Everyone in attendance was there to support and honor Kevin and his
family. The award was given to a very community minded and deserving
individual.
